Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area

Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area is located on Highway 19, just minutes from Waipio Valley. This park offers ample camping facilities as well as hiking trails throughout its 62 acres; it’s also one of the best places in the area for stargazing at night due to its remote location and lack of light pollution. With its rich Hawaiian history and breathtaking views of the North Kohala coast, this state park is a great place to spend the day.

Aiea Bay State Recreation Area

Aiea Bay State Recreation Area is a popular spot for locals, as it’s only a short drive from Waipio. The park offers a nice stretch of sandy beach and calm waters for swimming and snorkeling. There are also several picnic areas where visitors can gather to eat lunch or dinner. If you’re up for a hike, head to the top of Pu’u ka Pele, which is a lava flow that makes up part of the volcanic cone of Mauna Loa, which is the world’s largest active volcano.
The park also features an off-leash dog park where your furry friends can run around and play with other pups in a safe environment. If you go here on a Sunday, you may also find local vendors selling food and other wares at their weekly farmers market.

Wahiawā Freshwater State Recreation Area

This park is a great place to go for a hike and enjoy the scenery. It is also close to Waipio Valley, which is a popular tourist attraction. There are five different trails in Wahiawā that range from easy to difficult. They take you through forests and along streams, so you can see some beautiful scenery.
If you want to do some fishing, this park has two ponds where you can catch rainbow trout and largemouth bass, but you need to purchase a permit first from the Division of Forestry and Wildlife. You will also need a fishing license from them if you plan on bringing your own equipment or renting any of theirs at the park entrance building. The park offers bathrooms, drinking fountains, and picnic areas near several pullouts along the highway.
