The air conditioner in your car circulates the refrigerant, which continually shifts from liquid to gaseous form and back again. This process involves a few different components, any of which can occasionally run into trouble. If you find your car AC not working one morning, you might have one of the following problems on your hands. Have a technician at your local Genesis dealer diagnose and repair it right away.

No Air Blowing Into Your Cabin

If no air at all is coming into your cabin when you turn on the AC, the blower motor may have a fault. Blower motors can sometimes wear out with age or suffer an electrical problem, such as a blown fuse or faulty relay. The blower resistor, which controls the amount of air blowing through, might also be malfunctioning.

One of the air intakes might also be blocked by leaves or other debris from outside the car. The first of the intakes is where air comes in from outside the car, and the other intake allows air into the cabin. If either of these intakes becomes blocked, it will impede the airflow.

No Cold Air Blowing Into the Cabin

You might have AC air blowing into the cabin that remains warm and won’t cool down. This probably means the cooling system isn’t working, perhaps because of a refrigerant leak. If a hose or connection has sprung a leak, the refrigerant will be steadily evaporating into the open air, instead of flowing around the AC system.

You’ll most likely need a technician to identify the source of a refrigerant leak, as refrigerant is a transparent oily substance that’s hard to see and quickly evaporates. But if you look closely at the hoses, you may find a film of oily substance gathering around the leaking area.

Strange-Smelling Air From Your AC

Like many other car components, air conditioners are more likely to develop problems when left unused for prolonged periods of time. Unfortunately, most drivers leave their air conditioners unused for several months over winter when we don’t need cold air.

One issue that might develop in an unused car AC is the buildup of mold, fungi, and mildew in any moisture that’s trapped inside the system. When you turn on the AC, this problem will make the air in your cabin smell pretty bad. You’ll probably need a technician to clean out the mildew.

Odd Rattling or Whining AC Noises

Any unusual sounds coming from your AC means something is wrong. Trapped debris might cause a rattling or banging sound. A failing compressor clutch would make a similar noise. If one of the bearings has worn out, you might hear a grinding or squeaking sound. It’s best to have a technician diagnose and fix any noise issues.
