Tires tend to last around three to five years on average. Once a tire nears the end of its lifespan, it becomes unsafe to use. Because of this, it’s sensible to watch for the signs of trouble outlined below and visit your local Genesis dealership for new tires as soon as you notice a problem.

Bulging or Blistering Rubber

When a sharp knock against a curb or pothole punctures the inner layers of a tire, air can sometimes escape to become trapped beneath the outer layer of rubber. This often creates a bulge or blister, which means the tire is no longer fit for safe use.

Cracks in the Sidewalls

As tires age, small cracks usually appear in the sidewalls as the rubber dries out. When these tiny cracks lengthen or deepen to the point where you can see underlying steel or fabric, or you could push the tip of a ballpoint pen into the crack, it’s time to replace the tire.

Shallow Tread Depths

The tread depths of tires shouldn’t be allowed to diminish below 2/32 of an inch, which is the legal minimum in most states. At anything less than 2/32 of an inch, the tire can no longer reliably grip the road. And while facing the icy roads of winter, it may be wise to replace your tires long before the treads reach 2/32 of an inch.

Unevenly Worn Tires

With regular tire rotation, you shouldn’t have trouble with uneven tire wear. But if you forget to rotate your tires and they become too uneven in size, you may have to replace the full set of four. Driving with dramatically uneven tires can diminish both handling and safety.

Serious Punctures

If one of your tires suffers a puncture, an experienced technician may be able to repair it and save the tire. In the case of more serious punctures or punctures at awkward locations on the tire where the rubber needs to flex a lot, you may need to get a new tire.

Strange Vibrations

Excessive vibration while driving can point to a number of problems with the suspension or wheels. Damaged or uneven tires can also cause strange vibrations along with excessive road noise. If you’re experiencing unusual vibrations, have a technician inspect your tires and wheels to diagnose the cause.

Excessively Old Tires

Once tires pass six years, it’s considered wise to have them replaced. You can check the manufacturing date of your tires by looking at the four-digit number on the sidewall. This number shows the week and year of manufacture respectively: the first two digits denote the week during the year and the second two digits denote the year itself.
