Nanakuli is known for its clear waters and is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing when the conditions are right. BBQs are welcome so bring along something to eat and spend the day. Parking is fairly limited so it's best to arrive early, but there are restrooms and showers to keep your trip comfortable. A highlight of Nanakuli is the spectacular Mermaid Caves, located at the south end of the beach where the terrain is rockier. The caves are underneath the rock formations on the beach which provide lots of tide pools to explore. Access the caves by swimming in from the ocean, or if you're feeling adventurous there's a 10-foot rock jump through an opening. Always check the depth and currents before jumping as these vary inside the cave. Makua Beach This lesser-known gem is a little further afield but well worth the trip to avoid the crowds. The sweeps of white sand are backed by the Waianae Mountains, providing spectacular views. The waves can get strong and there are rocks in the water, but it's a popular spot for local kids with body boards so it is safe to enjoy the water if you're careful. Off the beaten track, there are no public amenities at Makua beach, but there's plenty of space to change in the back of the Genesis GV80 SUV. If swimming's not your thing then spend some relaxing time with nature exploring the tide pools and the small cave.
